Adjustable skegs are a key component of modern sea kayak design, allowing the paddler to balance the handling of the boat with the prevailing conditions. Sadly, all too often the skeg has also turned into an Achilles heel, with kinked wires and failing sliders preventing full operation of the blade, or under-sized blades not providing an adequate grip of the water.
Kari-Tek's skeg systems end the frustration of poorly performing skegs. These are class-leading designs which offer excellent value. Available in two variants - wire and rope operated - Kari-Tek's systems share a common cartridge based design and a large, deep, profiled blade for optimum performance.
The wire skeg offers maximum performance. Kari-Tek's custom designed slider is smooth and highly resistant to jams. The operating wire runs in a plastic sheath which provides maximum responsiveness and "feel". For trouble free operation, the skeg blade is housed in a robust cassette; its large, dagger design grips the water well even in extreme conditions. Kari-Tek's wire skeg is immune to the kinking problems which plague many other systems - if knocked the blade simply retracts undamaged.
The entry-level rope skeg version of Kari-Tek's system beats other rope skegs hands down in terms of responsiveness. Sharing the same blade and cassette design with the wire operated version, it allows the paddler to react quickly and easily to wind and sea conditions with so much more precision than competing rope skegs, offering fantastic value for money.
Both variants of the system are virtually maintenance free and totally corrosion resistant. Kayakers love them: click here to read their reviews.
You can try our skeg systems for yourself at our Ayrshire showroom. Come and test the wire and rope versions on our own lochan, or hire out our kayaks for a longer trial along the nearby Ayrshire coast or further afield. Hire charges are refundable from the cost of a boat purchased from us.
Our wire and rope skeg systems are available as an option in new kayaks purchased through Kari-Tek; just let us know when ordering your boat.
