Sea Kayak HandlingSea Kayak Handling Ref: PPB07
NEW: Sea Kayak Handling by Doug Cooper
Essential Knowledge for Beginner & Intermediate Paddlers
A practical guide that will help you to master the skills needed to manoeuvre a sea kayak efficiently. For beginner and intermediate paddlers. Doug draws on his personal and coaching experience to help the reader master sea kayak handling skills and techniques. Accurate sequential photos and simple concise language make the descriptions easy to follow and understand.

The foundation skills of posture, connectivity (how your body is connected to the kayak), power transfer and learning to ‘feel’ how the boat responds, are explored initially. The author then goes on to tackle forward paddling, keeping the kayak on course, reverse paddling, edging, turning on the spot, forward turns on the move, reverse turns on the move, stern rudders, moving sideways, support strokes, and the use of skegs and rudders.

Sea Kayak Handling is recommended as support material for the British Canoe Union 3 and 4 Star (Sea) awards.

Doug Cooper has spent a lifetime playing and working in the outdoors! He is at his happiest when exploring new parts of the world or challenging himself and others to improve their skills; this he has been doing for over twenty years. With a constant lust for adventure, Doug has sea kayaked all over the world including Greenland, Iceland, Norway’s Lofoten Islands, Canada, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Corsica, Sardinia and Croatia. At present Doug works as Head of Paddlesport at Glenmore Lodge, Scotland’s National Outdoor Centre.

Scottish Sea Kayak Trail Scottish Sea Kayak Trail  Ref: PPB06
Scottish Sea Kayak Trail by Simon Willis
ISBN: 978-1-906095-17-8
Scotland’s west coast is an undisputed world-class sea kayaking destination. This book challenges the reader to kayak a 500km route, from the Isle of Gigha off the Kintyre peninsula, to the Summer Isles near Ullapool. It can be undertaken in four holiday-sized sections or as one long, glorious journey.

The emphasis is on practical advice; how to tackle tricky tidal passages; places to visit; where to source essential information; food re-supply; where to safely leave kayaks overnight; how and when to shuttle vehicles; and the accessibility of public transport. Although camping is an essential element of this journey the book does not identify wild camp sites or even picnic places. It gives sea kayakers enough information to seek out their own adventures and so spread the environmental impact.

There are useful photographs and notes to help identify wildlife without disturbance, plus practical recommendations on wild camping, from minimum impact techniques to Scottish access law.

For those who travel the trail in the comfort of their armchairs, there’s also the story of the author’s own journey. Together you will travel under big skies on imposing seas in the company of seals, dolphins, eagles and gulls. The Scottish Sea Kayak Trail is waiting for you.

Scottish Canoe Classics: 25 Great Canoe and Kayak Trips by Eddie Palmer
ISBN: 978-0-9547061-9-7

An illustrated guide to some of the finest tours of Scotland’s waterways. Wild lochs, placid canals and broad rivers, as they can only be seen from a canoe or kayak. Eddie has chosen his favourite twenty-five inland touring routes and described them in great detail. The routes are beautifully illustrated with numerous colour photos and maps.

The selected routes are suitable for open canoes, sit-on-tops and touring kayaks. Many of them can be tackled as a single voyage or a series of day trips, with campsites en route. The journeys are all accessible but highly varied, taking place on inland lochs, sheltered sea lochs and rivers (of an easy nature, up to grade two). A wonderful book for planning voyages and inspiring dreams, or sharing your experiences with others.

Sea Kayak NavigationSea Kayak Navigation Ref: PPB04
Sea Kayak Navigation by Franco Ferrero
ISBN: 978-1-906095-03-1

A concise manual of navigation aimed specifically at sea kayakers. In this respect the 2nd edition hasn't changed at all. The devil is, of course, in the detail.

As a result of feedback from readers my views on ‘what sea kayakers need to know and are likely to use’ has changed. I have added and expanded on topics where I have considered this desirable, but have taken great care to keep it as short and simple as possible. There is no need for a glossary as all the terms are explained in the book. To that end there is a comprehensive index.

There are exercises suggested at the end of the chapters. Make use of them: they will ensure that what you have read is understood and remembered. The ultimate test of whether or not the lessons have been absorbed is the first time you plan and execute a trip relying on your own navigation. Take precautions; plan simple trips and aim for big targets to start with.

Ask someone more experienced to check your calculations the first few times. Try and get someone else on the trip to plan it independently and compare your results. If they are reasonably close, carry on. If they disagree, start again! Always take into account the weather forecast, and base your planning on the abilities of the weakest members of your group. Build up slowly.

Enjoy the book and enjoy your paddling.

Tall Stories: Andy Jackson a Biography by Ronald Cameron
ISBN: 978-1-906095-08-6

Andy Jackson’s death in December 2004 robbed the Scottish outdoor scene of an extraordinary personality. In this celebration of a truly inspirational life we follow Andy on kayaking adventures in Norway, Nepal, New Zealand, the USA, Canada, Iceland, Turkey, Chile and of course his native Scotland.

Stories and articles from Andy himself, his friends and family recount his adventures with all the joie de vivre he showed; as a campaigner, kayaker, skier and paraglider. From his scrapes with the ‘Polis’ and authorities to his worldwide catalogue of first descents. Above all Andy will be remembered for his ability to befriend and inspire everyone he met.

The royalties from this book are to be divided equally between the Andy Jackson Fund for Access and the IcFEM (providing education, healthcare, agriculture and social support in Kenya).
